What I've Been Consuming - 01/26/20

Books/Comics

Finished Station 11 by Emily St. John Mandel - Written with a wonderful and sad patience. The story unfolds bit by bit, but all the while is connecting in beautiful and terrifying ways.

Finished Gideon Falls TPB 1 by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino with colors by Dave Stewart - A psychological horror story that while good is not a complete story as it ends with a cliffhanger. I love comics, but when a trade paper back is all build up and ends with a beginning it can be a bit frustrating. The art is beautiful, but sometimes is too minimal. The colors are muted with pops of red for emphasis. This works quite well and shows Dave Stewart’s continued skill for restraint. He’s rarely showy and it always pays off.

Side note: I’ll be in Chicago at the end of February/start of March for C2E2.

Music

Listening to a myriad of different artists old and new on my “Dinner” mix on Spotify. Click the link below to listen.

Dinner

Some highlights for me are:

Night Moves - Waiting for the Symphony

Amen Dunes - Believe

Whitney - No Woman

Kevin Morby - Harlem River, No Halo, I Have Been to the Mountain

Gabriel Garzón-Montano - 6 8

Also, doing a lot of painting to a mix of old and new Leonard Cohen.

Leonard Cohen

Also Also, new(ish) Albums (for me at least)

21 Savage - i am > I was (2018) - Pretty dope.

Kid Cudi - Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’ (2016) - I stumbled across this by accident and it sounds like he was watching a lot of Stranger Things! I love it.

Movies/TV

Terminator Dark Fate - Not as bad as word of mouth was saying. Not as great as T1 and T2. Worth seeing though.

Don’t F••k with Cats - Oh my god! It’s like watching a psychopath operate in real time.

Crisis on Infinite Earth’s - Big goofy fun. Watched mainly while drawing.

Succession - A few episodes into S2. It’s weird to be so invested in watching terrible people. It’s enthralling, but god is it terrifying to see rich people so blasé about making decisions that affect so many people’s lives.

The Outsider - 3 episodes in and I am hooked! Dripping with creepiness and fantastic acting by Ben Mendelsohn.

The Morning Show - Flat out fantastic. Just watch it.

Video Games

Still Playing MK11 and Mario Kart.

Weather

It’s been cold and rainy and snowy here in Detroit. I hate it, but I enjoy the long days of chilling on the couch, painting/arting a bit and watching tv/reading/sleeping.
